Meet Your Neighbour: The Surrey Volunteer Who’s Fed 10,000 Families

A heartwarming profile of a community hero making a difference one meal at a time.

ChitChat Editorial May 8, 2025 5 min read

Maya started cooking for her neighbours in 2020. Five years later her Surrey-based volunteer kitchen has delivered more than 10,000 meals to families across Newton, Whalley, and Cloverdale.

“It started with one pot of soup,” she says. “Now we have eight volunteer cooks, a delivery van donated by a local plumber, and a partnership with three Surrey grocers.”

Maya credits local businesses for keeping the program alive — every month, neighbourhood spots in Surrey donate ingredients, kitchen time, and delivery hours.

If you would like to support, ChitChat is featuring Maya’s kitchen on the back cover of our July Surrey edition — the donation link will be live there.
